Nevada teachers have lost an ally in their efforts to get the Education Initiative, or Margins Tax, passed. Officials with the AFL-CIO announced Friday they now oppose the initiative that would put a two-percent margins tax on businesses.
The executive secretary treasurer for the AFL-CIO, Danny Thompson, said in a statement quote – “It is a vote against a flawed initiative that will cost many members their jobs and raise the cost of living." The AFL-CIO originally supported the initiative. Supporters of the Margins Tax say this will raise about 700-million dollars a year that could go to education. The question will go to the voters on November 4th.
