Nevada Facility Simulates Quakes

Arguably, one of the coolest devices in northern Nevada is a machine that simulates an earthquake. The University of Nevada Reno has three of these gizmos—they’re called shake-tables.

And scientists at UNR’s Earthquake Engineering Laboratory use them to see how well building materials stand up to the stresses of an earthquake.

Ian Buckle, director of the Earthquake Enginnering Laboratory, says the new facility will allow them to conduct world-improving research, test new designs and materials that will make buildings, bridges and highways safer.
