Report Shows Compounding Pharmacies A Factor In Meningitis Outbreak

The investigative news site ProPublica reportsthere is a connection between a failed sex pill marketed as "Vegas Mixx" and the recent outbreak of a deadly form of meningitis. The connection between the two is the use of compounding pharmacies. According to ProPublica, compounding pharmacies manufacture patient-specific drugs tailored to the needs of people who may have allergies or can't use mass produced drugs for any reason. The drugs compounding pharmacies produce however, are exempt from traditional review by the Food and Drug Administration. ProPublica reporter Marshall Allen joins us to talk about the failed Vegas themed sex pill and how compounding pharmacies work within the highly regulated prescription drug world.
