Conjuring the Desert

In an L.A. Times article Loyola Marymount Professor, Ruben Martinez explains how he and his colleague Douglas Burton-Christie try to reconcile the realities of the the life in the modern day desert and the spiritualism that Christian monks sought while wondering into the Egyptian desert in ancient times. Martinez says immigrants crossing the desert and fleeing bandits and the border patrol resonates with early monastic anachoresis where monks sought a better life in the desert. We'll talk with Ruben Martinez and Douglas Burton-Christie about their ideas of life in the desert.
