The Clark County Commission recently chose 11 people to be part of the advisory board for steering UMC, the county's only public hospital, into a research and learning hospital. The group includes, doctors, labor leaders, civic leader as well as experts in insurance, business and a legal expert.
The ultimate goal is to make UMC a place where cutting edge research and training happens. The hospital has been in dire financial trouble for much of the past couple of years.
The appointees were picked from about 123 applicants and they will help the commission with medical policies, contracts with vendors and quality control as well as monitor the hospital's finances and ensure that the county's hospital complies with state and federal laws.
But, despite the good intentions of the board, how will UMC, which is overrun by red ink, overcome it all and become what commissioners hope it will? And what are board members' ideas about making that happen? We talk with members of the UMC advisory board.br>
