Parolee Who Shot Nevada Deputy Gets Up To 61 Years In Prison

GARDNERVILLE, Nev. (AP) — A judge has sentenced a man to up to 61 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to shooting a Nevada deputy during a traffic stop last year.

Prosecutors said 23-year-old Nicholas Berreman of California pleaded guilty in February to multiple charges including attempted murder. He was also fined $15,000 on Monday. Police said Douglas County deputies stopped a vehicle on Dec. 20 where they recognized Berreman as the passenger.

He was wanted in California for violating his parole. Police said Berreman shot Sgt. John Lenz three times. Lenz recovered and has since returned to duty. Berreman was booked into the Carson City sheriff's office jail.
