Lake Mead Could Hit Federal Water Shortage Levels

Lake Mead is again in danger of dropping low enough to trigger a federally declared water shortage, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.

A study from the Bureau of Reclamation says the lake, now at 1,085 feet, could end the year below 1,070 feet. Lack of snow in the Colorado Rockies is the main reason.

The snowpack last week was about 28 percent below average, according to a report from the bureau, and dry soil conditions mean the water reaching the river might be about half what is normal.

This comes as the river and its reservoirs continue to feel the effects of a two-decade long drought.
