Crowell was first elected mayor in 2008 and reelected in 2012 and 2016. He didn't run for reelection this year.

While mayor, Crowell oversaw Carson City's response to the Great Recession and a major redevelopment of the capital’s downtown.

Crowell is a native of Tonopah and went on to serve in the Vietnam War before retiring from the Navy as a captain.

Gov. Steve Sisolak said Crowell “served Nevadans with honesty and integrity.” Flags at city facilities will be flown at half-staff for a week.
