A Washoe County resident has become the first person in the United States to contract the coronavirus twice.

KRNV television in Reno reports that the director of the Nevada State Public Health Laboratory, Dr. Mark Pandori, says the case involved somebody who was symptomatic and appeared to be sick.

The resident tested positive, then negative twice and eventually tested positive a second time, which required hospitalization.

While Pandori says that the case is unusual, it’s not surprising, saying that health experts need to determine how often reinfection is happening.

Scientists announced on Monday that a Hong Kong man tested positive for COVID-19 tested positive for a second time.
