Facebook Group Pushes For Kaepernick Statue On UNR Campus

An effort is underway to place a statue of University of Nevada, Reno alumnus and Wolf Pack star Colin Kaepernick on campus.

The Facebook group “UNR Alumni Campaign for Statue of Kaepernick Kneeling in Mackay Stadium” was started June 13 and already has more than 450 members.

The school’s Center for Student Engagement says there’s also a proposal in the works from a pair of students.

Kaepernick played for the Wolf Pack from 2007 to 2010 before joining the NFL, playing for the San Francisco 49ers.

Kaepernick spurred controversy when he chose to kneel during the national anthem at NFL games to protest police brutality and other facets of racial injustice.

He has not been signed with an NFL team since he became a free agent in 2016.
