Henderson Approves Bonds That Could Be Used To Build Arena

Plans for the proposed new hockey arena in Henderson got a major boost Tuesday when the Henderson City Council authorized issuing $60 million in bonds.

Some of that money could be used to replace the aging Henderson Pavilion with an indoor venue, which could include a 6,000-seat arena that would host home games for the new Vegas Golden Knights minor league AHL team.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that the city says they are issuing the bonds while interest rates are very low and that taxes would not be increased.

The city says the pavilion needs extensive repair work and upgrades and that the new arena would provide year-round entertainment and meeting space.

However, many residents have come out against the plan because of concerns about traffic, parking and cost.

Before an arena can be built, the project itself has to be approved by the council. A contract with the Golden Knights will be discussed at the May 19 meeting, the city has said.
