If Clark County's hospitals reach a critical number of occupants because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors' Authority is prepared to open the convention center as an alternative treatment facility.

Officials announced the medical surge plan during a news conference Tuesday.

County Commission Chair Marilyn Kirkpatrick said the surge plan is intended for the worst-case scenario, but she reminded everyone to do their part to avoid the worst by staying home.  

Kirkpatrick said the goal of the plan is to be "overprepared," emphasizing the importance of continuing to practice social distancing and good hygiene.
