Las Vegas Teachers Start Drive For Sales Tax Hike To Raise $1B

Las Vegas-area teachers have filed a petition to increase sales taxes and raise more than $1 billion per year for schools.

It's the second time this week they've proposed a tax initiative.

A political action group backed by the Clark County Education Association submitted documents Wednesday to seek a statewide vote to raise the school support tax to just over 4%.

It comes after a union-backed group filed Monday to begin collecting signatures to raise taxes on the largest casinos in the state. Nevada public schools have for years ranked at or near the bottom nationally in spending per student, class size and performance.
