A decision by the City of Henderson city council reaffirms the city's commitment to welcome refugees for resettlement.
The city council voted to support a letter sent by Mayor Debra March to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.
The brief Dec. 16 letter was in response to an executive order from President Donald Trump that refugees will not be allowed to resettle in a state or municipality without written consent.
During Tuesday’s meeting. March noted that the program was not new and had been helping refugees for decades.
In addition to Henderson, the cities of Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, and Reno welcome refugees.
Gov. Steve Sisolak sent Pompeo a letter Dec. 18 consenting to resettlement of refugees in Nevada.
