The city of Las Vegas will no longer prosecute misdemeanor domestic violence cases.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports after the Nevada Supreme Court decided defendants in those type of cases are entitled to jury trials, the city decided to reclassify the offense as simple battery.
The change removes additional penalties that apply to domestic violence cases, such as counseling requirements and a threshold for enhancement to a felony.
