City Agrees To Public-Private Partnership To Fix Up Vacant Hotel

The Las Vegas City Council unanimously approved a public-private partnership with a troubled downtown hotel to turn it into apartments, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The city will work with the owner of the Safari Motel on a $440,000 renovation.

City officials say the project will create 27 jobs, boost downtown housing and generate modest annual state and local taxes, all while improving one of downtown’s most blighted properties.

The property, on East Fremont Street, closed in May and has long been known as known as a hot-bed of violent crime and drug use.

Since 2006, officials had opened 11 code enforcement cases, according to the city. There have been three fires at the property in the last five years.
