Native American students are asking UNLV to remove a statue of the school’s mascot, “Hey Reb.”
The school’s Native American Association included that request in a list of things they say will make the campus more inclusive to indigenous people. In suggesting a different mascot be chosen, the NAA said “Hey Reb” represented violence and the murder of Native Americans.
They want the statue to be replaced with one of a Southern Paiute woman, with a plaque acknowledging the Paiute land the campus is built on. T

he group also wants UNLV to offer Paiute language classes, something UNR began doing earlier this year.
University spokesman Tony Allen says he’s not aware of any official talks about what the organization is asking for.
