Reno-Area District: Testing Contractor Reports Data Breach

RENO, Nev. (AP) — The school district that serves the Reno area of northern Nevada says a testing contractor for the district has reported a hack involving student and employee information.

The Washoe County School District said Wednesday that Pearson Clinical Assessment notified the district last week that it learned in March of a November 2018 "data security incident" involving software used for assessing students' academic progress.

According to a district statement, names and some birth dates of 114,000 students enrolled between 2001 and 2006 were exposed along with names and email addresses of "a small number" of employees.

Allen Cunningham, the district's data security officer, said the limited information revealed constrains possible misuse of the data but he recommended that affected people to take advantage of Pearson's offer of credit monitoring services.
