Monorail Asks For Up To $135 Million In Public Funds For Expansion

The cost of a proposed expansion to the Las Vegas Monorail has gone up since the project was first brought to the Clark County Commission.

The company asked commissioners this week to guarantee a public contribution of up to $135 million would be available.

The expected cost of the extension and two additional stations has now risen to $172 million, a $62 million increase.

The extension would take the monorail south to the Mandalay Bay, with a stop at the Venetian and Palazzo properties. A current agreement between the county and the Las Vegas Monorail provides $4.5 million of hotel room tax per year in case of emergency.

That agreement would need to be amended to guarantee that money would be available for a term of 30 years.
