Mom, 4 Relatives Accused Neglecting Child Who Shot Himself

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Five adult Las Vegas-area family members are accused of felony child neglect after police say a 3-year-old boy shot himself in the head with a handgun he found in his mother's purse at their home last November.

North Las Vegas police Officer Eric Leavitt said Wednesday the boy survived his injury and was in the house on Monday when officers arrested his 29-year-old mother, Liza Haut, grandparents Marvin and Rackell Haut, and uncles Richard and Joshua Haut.

Each was freed on bail pending court appearances April 18. Calls on Wednesday to telephone numbers possibly associated with them did not connect.

Leavitt says police found 17 hunting rifles, shotguns and handguns in the home after the Nov. 10 shooting.

He says most were unsecured, in places a child could reach.
