Dozens Show At Nevada Hearing For Collective Bargaining Bill

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada lawmakers are hearing a bill that would give certain state workers the right to collectively bargain.

The hearing drew dozens of people to the legislative building Thursday evening in Carson City. The measure seeks to allow state workers the right to bargain collectively over wages, hours and other employment conditions.

Sen. David Parks says state workers are underpaid and the legislation would be a step forward. Officials from the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees are advocating for the legislation.

Efforts to enact similar bargaining stretch back at least 46 years in Nevada.

The National Conference of State Legislatures reports a majority of states have some form of collective bargaining for state employees. Opponents argue the bill could come with an increased price tag for the state.
