Nevada Legislators Hear Bill To Change Abortion Consent Laws

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Legislators have heard a Nevada bill that seeks to remove a requirement that pregnant women be told about the emotional impacts of having an abortion.

Democratic state Sen. Yvanna Cancela presented the bill to lawmakers on Monday in Carson City. She told lawmakers the legislation aims to ensure that the state's informed consent laws are in line with medical best practices.

The bill would also do away with a criminal penalty for anyone who causes an abortion without the advice of a physician.

It also repeals a requirement that pregnant women consent to an abortion without being coerced, something opponents argue is not antiquated and helps prevent a woman from being pressured into an abortion.
