U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto joined 40 other senators in reintroducing a bill to expand federal background checks on all gun sales.
Under current law, unlicensed or private sellers are not required to conduct a background check prior to transferring a firearm.
The Background Check Expansion Act expands to all unlicensed sellers, whether they do business online, at gun shows or out of their home.
Exceptions to the rule would include transfers between law enforcement officers, temporary loans on firearms for hunting and sporting events or providing firearms as gifts to immediate family members or inheritances.
All of the bills co-sponsors in the Senate are Democrats, with the exception of Senator Bernie Sanders, who is a registered Independent.
