Housing Authority May Have To Turn To Reserves During Shutdown

The Southern Nevada Regional Housing Authority may have to dip into reserves to cover rental assistance payments in March due to the ongoing government shutdown.

The money would pay private landlords who rent to low-income, elderly or disabled people enrolled in the Housing Choice Voucher program, commonly known as section 8.

About 11,000 Clark County households are enrolled in the program, housing about 30,000 tenants at a cost of $9 million a month.

Funding from the Department of Housing and Urban Development should last through February, and extreme measures won’t need to be taken if the shutdown is resolved by the end of February.
