LAS VEGAS (AP) — Commissioners in Clark County appointed two Democrats on Tuesday to fill vacancies in the Nevada state Senate created by the results of last month's election.
Commissioners followed the advice of Nevada Senate Democrats and unanimously voted to appoint Assemblyman Chris Brooks and Public Utilities Commission administrative attorney Dallas Harris. They also picked their preferred candidate to take the Assembly seat of dead Republican brothel owner Dennis Hof.
Brooks will represent District 3, replacing Richard "Tick" Segerblom, who was elected to the Clark County Commission. Harris will represent District 11, which belonged to Attorney General-elect Aaron Ford.
The appointments drew several people to speak before the commissioners, who then praised the applicants and said they were voting for the people recommended by the Democratic caucus.
Brooks and Harris will serve until 2020.
The commissioners also picked Gregory Hafen II to fill the Assembly seat belonging to Hof, who died in October but still won the election. The commissioners will now gather with their counterparts in Nye and Lincoln counties to make a final selection.
Brooks' appointment leaves a seat open in the state Assembly. This follows the vacancy created Monday by Democrat Olivia Diaz's decision to resign from the Assembly to pursue a seat in the Las Vegas City Council.
Clark County is now accepting applications from residents interested in filling the two Assembly seats. The applications are due Monday.
