PUC Questions Southwest Gas Request To Raise Rates

A state review of Southwest Gas found the utility wants to raise its rates to pay for costs associated with questionable expenditures.

In May, Southwest Gas applied to the Public Utilities Commission to increase rates for each customer by $2 to $3 per month.

The PUC reviewed the charges and calls into question many of the company’s expenditures that included charges for chair massages, expensive dinner meetings and golf club memberships.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports an engineer with the PUC submitted 42 pages of written testimony that shows Southwest Gas also submitted more than $7,500 in charges for a Casio digital piano, a Yamaha home theater system, a grill and multiple Bose wireless speakers, as well as $71,000 for non-travel meals.

The company would pass on all of those costs to customers if the PUC approved them. A representative from Southwest Gas said it would file rebuttal testimony with the PUC later this month.
