Nevada Inmate Recaptured After Leaving Minimum-Security Camp

ELY, Nev. (AP) — Prison officials say an inmate serving a robbery sentence from Reno has been recaptured less than 24 hours after walking away from a minimum-security facility in eastern Nevada.

The state Department of Corrections said Thursday that White Pine County sheriff's deputies found 25-year-old Gregg McGruder in a bathroom at a truck stop outside Ely.

McGruder had been reported missing Wednesday from a conservation camp south the city about 250 miles north of Las Vegas.

Officials say some 500 state prison inmates are housed at nine conservation camps around the state. They're trained for wildfire fighting, highway clean-ups, sandbag placement during floods and other jobs.

McGruder has been taken to the state's maximum-security prison in Ely.
