Giffords, Nevada Democrats Meet 1 Year After Las Vegas Shooting

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A day after Las Vegas marked the first anniversary of a mass shooting that killed 58 people, former U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords is meeting with gun violence survivors, Democratic candidates and activists as part of a midterm election push to register young voters and elect candidates supporting gun control.

The anniversary of the massacre at a Las Vegas Strip country music festival, along with a gun violence roundtable and voter mobilization event Tuesday, have revived a debate on guns in Nevada, where politicians have to navigate divided attitudes toward firearms.

Giffords, an Arizona Democrat who was gravely wounded in a 2011 shooting in Tucson, has a political operation that is focusing on challenging incumbents, including Nevada Republican Sen. Dean Heller, who they see as stalling gun control efforts.
