Mesquite Detective Accused Of Sex Abuse Fired

MESQUITE, Nev. (AP) — A veteran Mesquite police detective has been fired in the wake of his arrest on charges accusing him of sexually abusing a southern Utah teenager.

Chief Troy Tanner said in a statement released late Wednesday the completion of an internal affairs investigation has resulted in the termination of 50-year-old Gary Erickson.

Erickson was arrested Sept. 12 in Las Vegas. He's worked at the Mesquite Police Department since 1999.

The department said earlier Wednesday he'd been placed on administrative leave.

He's awaiting extradition to St. George, Utah on one count of sexual abuse of a minor, one count of dealing in material harmful to a minor and three counts of sexual exploitation.

It's not clear if Erickson has a lawyer or will be appointed one at a pending court appearance.
