LAS VEGAS (AP) — Authorities say evidence will be made public Sept. 11 in the chokehold death of an unarmed man by a Metro officer on the Las Vegas strip last year.
Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson made the decision to air the evidence after a grand jury refused to indict former officer Kenneth Lopera for Tashii Brown’s death.
Lopera used a stun gun against Brown at least seven times and put him in an unauthorized chokehold after Brown ran from police through a casino.
The Clark County coroner ruled Brown’s death resulted from asphyxia due to police restraint.
Lopera was then charged with involuntary manslaughter and oppression under color of office.
Lopera's legal representatives, however presented evidence to the grand jury behind closed doors that Brown died of cardiac arrest and methamphetamine intoxication.
