Paiute Tribe Bans Burning Man Car Washes

The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribal Council has banned car washes on tribal land during Burning Man this year because of concerns over water use.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports that vehicles driven to Burning Man often return with a coating of chalky alkali dust, which can be extremely difficult to remove.

Car washes in the Reno-Sparks and surrounding areas often have higher prices for washes that remove the dust, so many tribal members will set up hand car washes in towns along State Route 447.

That road is the only main road to and from the Burning Man event site.

The tribal council approved the prohibition of car washes until further notice, due to community water systems being at or near capacity.
