Nevada Democrats Hope Latinos Can Propel Them To Victory

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Democrats in Nevada are working to register and engage Latino voters ahead of this year's midterms, hoping to re-create the big wins that the Hispanic and immigrant community are credited with delivering for the party two years ago.

Democrats are building on successful organizing in 2016 and backlash against President Donald Trump's tough immigration policies. But they are running into headwinds.

Astrid Silva says many in her community say they won't vote and are grappling with deportations and the uncertainty on Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA.

Twenty-nine percent of people in Nevada are Latino and turning them out to vote is key for Democrats.

Lagging Hispanic turnout in the 2014 midterm election was cited for helping Republicans win major victories in Nevada. Two years later, organizing among Latinos and immigrant-dominated labor unions were credited with delivering Nevada to Hillary Clinton.
