Built southwest of Tahoe City, California in 1936, it originally was owned by the family of Bert C. Scott, who co-founded the Hall-Scott Engine Co. in Berkeley, California in 1910.

The company was a leading manufacturer of water-cooled aircraft engines before World War I and produced axles for Ford's Model T through the mid-1920s. It also built industrial engines for fire engines, tractors and boats.
