Wildfire Near Yosemite National Park Now Threatening Homes

The Ferguson Fire west of Yosemite National Park is now 21,000 acres and is getting closer to homes.

The fire’s eastern front is about four miles from the towns El Portal and West Yosemite. Another front in the southwest is moving toward the town of Jerseydale.

The fire has prompted evacuation advisories for those towns and many other homes and structures dotting the area.

An information officer with the Sierra National Forest said crews are in those communities digging preemptive lines around homes and structures in case the fire comes close.

The fire has also triggered mandatory evacuations in a half-dozen areas and has closed Highway 140, one of three primary entry points into Yosemite.

One hundred eight homes lie within that mandatory evacuation area, but most residents had already left by the time the area was sealed off.

Yosemite National Park remains open to visitors.
