LAS VEGAS (AP) — Two teachers are petitioning to have a new elementary school named after an off-duty police officer who died in the Las Vegas mass shooting.
KVVU-TV reports Clark County School District teachers Amberley Dorrell and Christine Virgen are putting together the nomination application to have one of the three new elementary schools set to open in fall 2019 after Las Vegas Police Officer Charleston Hartfield.
Hartfield died while off-duty at the Route 91 Harvest Festival on Oct. 1.
Dorrell and Virgen have received letters of recommendation from Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo and one of the officers who served in the Nevada Army National Guard with Hartfield.
School district leaders will narrow down the choices to nine before choosing the final three names in the fall.
