Medical Board Considering Loosening Restrictions On Over-Prescription Of Opioids

Tougher restrictions on the over-prescription of opioids might be alleviated if a panel of state medical examiners gets their way.

During a meeting Thursday,  a subcommittee of the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners recommended the consequences for violations of the Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention Act passed in January would be left to the board’s discretion.

The law stipulates added paperwork for doctors prescribing opioids.

The original regulations said doctors could lose their licenses after five violations.

But that draft created an uproar among doctors in January who said they didn’t adequately define the types of punishable conduct.
