GARDNERVILLE, NV (AP) — A new study on housing availability in western Nevada says there's little hope of expanding affordable rental opportunities for residents on the west shore of Lake Tahoe.
The study concludes the "sheer expense" of development in Douglas County from south of Sand Harbor to the California line "makes it impractical for the development of affordable housing."
Therefore, the consultants for Vogt Strategic Insights say they decided to focus their research on areas that offer realistic opportunities to address housing demands especially in the Minden-Gardnerville area and the northern Carson Valley.
The Record-Courier reports the study released last week projects a 3.8 percent increase in the number of households in Douglas County by 2021.
It says more than 2,200 rental households currently are spending more than 35 percent of their income on housing. Most of those have incomes below $35,000.
