MGM Resorts expects the Supreme Court to overturn a national ban on sports betting and is poised to take advantage of that opportunity.
Speaking at the end of a quarterly earnings call Thursday, Chairman and CEO Jim Murren said the company’s long track record of regulatory expertise and its involvement in the sports industry give it unique advantages.
“Having spent decades developing trust with the regulators, with sports books here in Nevada, with really our singular dominance in sports, we intend to be the biggest beneficiary of commercial sports betting should the Supreme Court overturn PASPA,” Murren said.
Murren was referring to the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, which is under review by the high court.
The measure bans sports betting outside Nevada and three other states.
A decision is expected this spring.
Earlier in the call, MGM announced it earned $223 million in the first quarter, up 8 percent from a year earlier.
