Six Fraternities Face Deadline To Sign Relationship Agreement With UNR

Six fraternities at the University of Nevada Reno face a deadline Thursday to either sign a relationship agreement with the school or lose recognition for the rest of the year.

The agreement requires fraternities to hire a live-in adviser and submit an incident report at the end of each semester to university officials.

There are 33 fraternities and sororities recognized by UNR.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reportsin 2016 and 2017, seven fraternities were found in violation of university policies, all involving alcohol.

In October 2016, Sigma Nu Fraternity lost recognition for 15 years following the death of 18-year-old pledge Ryan Abele, who fell on a staircase at the frat house after a night of partying.

The 2018 agreement mandated by UNR has four new regulations, officials say to prioritize the health and safety of the students.
