Mormon Church Supports Bill Protecting Church Leaders From Being Recorded Without Their Knowledge

The Mormon church is supporting proposed legislation in Utah that seeks to protect church leaders from being recorded without their knowledge.

House Bill 330 was sponsored by Republican Representative V. Lowry Snow of St. George.

A spokesman for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints said the church has expressed support for the bill because it seeks to protect the confidentiality of sensitive conversations, including those between ecclesiastical leaders and their members.

A petition campaign led by the popular “Mormon Stories” podcast host is underway that demands the church stop a longstanding practice of conducting one-on-one interviews between bishops and children that sometimes include inquiries about sexual matters.
