RENO, Nev. (AP) — A public memorial has been held for the longest-serving president in the history of the University of Nevada, Reno.
Joe Crowley was honored Saturday by his family and colleagues in a celebration of life that was open to the public.
The 84-year-old Crowley died Nov. 28 after battling pneumonia and from complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
He served as president of UNR from 1978 to 2001 but considered the university his home for the past 51 years.
Crowley was the 13th president of UNR and also served for three years as the president of the NCAA.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that all four of Crowley's children are UNR graduates and they spoke at his memorial held in the Joe Crowley Student Union on the school's campus.
