Wild Horse Advocates Concerned About Plans To Move Ownership Of Horses

Wild horse advocates are voicing concern about a proposal to shift ownership of thousands of northern Nevada horses from the state to a nonprofit group.

Opponents believe it could lead to mistreatment or slaughter of the animals. T he Nevada Board of Agriculture will discuss the proposal Tuesday at a meeting in Las Vegas.

The board oversees the estimated 3,000 horses that roam the Virginia Range near Reno.

The agenda item calls on the board to hand over the state’s interest in the horses to a so-far unnamed nonprofit animal advocate organization.

It’s unclear if such a group would manage the horses on the range or would be allowed to remove them.
