Polygamist Leader Lyle Jeffs Sentenced To 5 Years

A top leader in a polygamous church in Hildale, Utah was sentenced to five years in prison Wednesday.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports Lyle Jeffs was convicted of defrauding a government assistance program and then fleeing law enforcement and will serve five years in federal prison followed by three years of probation and a $1 million restitution fine to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Lyle Jeffs led daily operations of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and is the brother of the church’s imprisoned prophet Warren Jeffs.
