Metro Training More Officers To Act As Immigration Agents At CCDC

Las Vegas Metro Police is training additional officers to act as immigration agents at the county detention center.

In a meeting with Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials this week, officials with Metro said seven officers will be trained to participate in a program called 287(g).

About 20 community members attended the meeting and expressed concerns about the program’s effect on the deportation of undocumented immigrants without criminal backgrounds who are arrested for minor crimes.

The program arrived in Las Vegas in 2008 and allows Metro officers at the jail to check detainees for citizenship status – it has been expanded under President Donald Trump to include all undocumented immigrants rather than be restricted to those who are repeat criminal offenders.
