Police say he found Mitchell holding a bat and that he did not obey repeated commands to put it down.
Police say Sgt. Miguel Garcia fired at Mitchell four times with a less lethal handgun but the shots were ineffective.
Authorities say the officer used his pistol to fire at Mitchell after he started hitting the front doors of the business with the bat and made his way toward the store.
Mitchell was hospitalized.
