One of Las Vegas’ newest city councilors wants to repeal a ban that the city placed on the sale of domestic animals last year.
In 2016, councilors voted to ban the retail sale of dogs, cats and potbellied pigs to try to cut down on animals being obtained from puppy mills and similar cruel breeding operations.
The ban was supposed to go into effect in January.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports, however, that Councilwoman Michele Fiore wants the council to repeal the ban, calling it a “ridiculous bill.”
Councilmembers Ricki Barlow and Steve Seroka as well as Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman also took issue with the ban.
Only two pet stores in the city would be affected, and Mayor Goodman voiced concern that the two stores have been isolated when they have always sold from registered breeders.
California recently became the first state to require pet stores to only sell animals from rescue organizations.
