Reno City Council Votes To Upgrade Temporary Housing Unit

In an ongoing struggle with a rising homeless population, the Reno City Council voted yesterday to spend nearly $320,000 on upgrades to a temporary housing unit.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports for the past year, the city of Reno has been temporarily housing people in a warehouse that has a number of code violations, including no indoor restrooms or improvements for those with disabilities.

The money will be used to fix up the structure while the city pursues construction of a permanent homeless shelter, which is at least two years from being finished.

The city is using a grant meant to benefit low-income residents, which means if it ever sells the warehouse, it would have to reimburse the federal government $318,000.
