Water Authority Makes Exchange Deal With Mexico

The Southern Nevada Water Authority has voted to spend up to $7.5 million over the next 10 years in exchange for more Colorado River water from Mexico.

The Las Vegas Review Journal reports authority board members unanimously approved the payments Thursday as part of a water-sharing agreement the U.S. and Mexico are expected to sign next month.

Under the agreement, more than 229,000 acre-feet of Colorado River water will be shared, which is almost enough to supply the entire Las Vegas Valley for one year.

Mexico is expected to use the money on water saving projects such as repairing pipes, lining canals and curbing runoff.
