School Board Approves Millions In Cuts

The Clark County School District grappled with its budget during their meeting Thursday, coming to a decision that may affect many across the valley.

The Las Vegas Review Journal reports the board voted to approve more than $43 million in cuts to special education, summer schools, and student services. Board members expressed some resentment toward the state Legislature and the way education funding is distributed in Nevada.

The lion share of the cuts, or almost 73 percent, will have to come from schools and direct school services because of the funding split required by state law under the new school empowerment model.

Schools must now identify roughly $17.4 million in cuts to their individual budgets- so it’s still unclear how this will play out in the classroom.
