Poll: Majority of Utahans Think Sen. Hatch Shouldn't Run For Re-Election

An overwhelming majority of Utahs want Senator Orrin Hatch to retire.

According to a new poll by the Salt Lake Tribune and the University of Utah’s Hinckley Institute of Politics, nearly 8 in 10 registered voters polled said Hatch should not seek re-election.

Senator Hatch is the chairman of the Senate finance committee, former longtime chairman of the judiciary committee and the Senate president pro tem. Hatch has said he intends to run for another six-year term, though he won’t officially make the call until later this year.

Forty-eight percent of responders in the poll gave Hatch’s performance on the job negative marks. Salt Lake County Councilwoman Jenny Wilson, a Democrat, is the only announced candidate for the Senate seat next year.
